The term Microsoft Office Basic 2007 refers to a specific edition of Microsoft Office 2007. Microsoft Office 2007 is a suite of application software programs developed and sold by Microsoft Corporation. The suite consists of some fifteen different packages with another three programs being marketed as part of the Microsoft Office suite, although these are only available as separate programs and do not form part of any of the editions.
Microsoft markets various editions of Office 2007. These editions each consist of a number of the software package, and each edition has a specific licensing model. The licensing model basically determines on how many devices the software may be loaded.
The basic edition of Microsoft Office 2007 consists of only three programs: Word, Excel and Outlook. (to learn more about these, visit compulearning). These are the 3 programs in the suite that are most widely used, Word for document creation, Excel for numeric calculations and data analysis, and Outlook for sending and receiving emails. It is interesting to note that the next edition (Home and Student) excludes Outlook but adds PowerPoint and OneNote. I must admit that I fail to understand the logic behind these edition (why does Microsoft deem that students do not need Outlook), but can only presume that Microsoft has done its marketing homework. The licensing model does however give a clue in that it specifies that the home edition may be installed on 3 devices, but is for non-commercial uses only. Maybe Microsoft deems the sending and receiving of emails as a commercial activity.
What is also fascinating is that OneNote is included in the Home and Student edition, but is then excluded from the Standard, Small Business and even the Professional editions! Another interesting (seemingly) anomaly is the inclusion of the Office Customization tool in both the Standard and Small Business editions, only to be excluded from the Professional and even the Ultimate edition.
All being said and done, the Basic addition of Microsoft Office 2007 should meet the computing requirements of a sizeable chunk of market at the bottom end of the scale.
